5 Tips For How to Get the Best Fall Wedding Photos
Fall is often considered one of the best times to have a wedding, which is no surprise considering the changing leaves, milder temperatures, and the rise of the pumpkin spice frenzy. If you’re planning a wedding any time between late September and November, you can take full advantage of the beautiful scenery that comes with autumn, not to mention the incorporation of a deeper toned color palette (hello jewel tones). But, the season doesn’t come without its challenges. The weather is fairly unpredictable, and daylight savings time makes for a shorter period to get your desired photos. So we’ve listed five tips below that will help you shoot the best fall wedding photos!
Have A Schedule
First order of business is to make a shot list of your desired photos before the wedding, such as detail shots or the treasured dress reveal. With a limited amount of sunlight hours, you need to make a schedule for when you plan on taking which photos. If you’re having your wedding in the afternoon or early evening, it is a good idea to schedule a time in the morning before your ceremony where you take portraits and try to knock out at least half of your planned shots.
Be Mindful of the Weather
You might have planned for a cloud-free wedding day, but as the temperature starts to cool down, you have to be prepared for last-minute changes in the weather. The bright side of potential cloudy or overcast weather is that they can still make for great photos, you may just have to have your photographer brighten up the image a little if they appear too dull to you. Even if it comes to the worst-case scenario, where it’s pouring rain, take some photos inside of your wedding venue and set up a portrait session with your photographer for a few days later when the weather has improved.
Catch the Golden Hour
If it works with your wedding schedule, try to shoot during the golden hour, which is about an hour before sunset. The sun in the background of your shots will cast a soft, warm glow on you and your partner’s silhouettes. It will also amplify the warm tones of orange, yellow and red in the foliage and landscape of your location. Not all of your photos need to be taken during this time, but if you have a few minutes to spare during your reception or post-ceremony, golden hour always makes for timeless photos.
Embrace the Fall Colors
Even if you decide not to include major fall colors like red, orange, yellow, and gold in your wedding color palette, try to incorporate them into your photos. They will bring a warmth and sense of autumn to your photos. If the location you chose doesn’t have any fall foliage or traces of jewel tones, consider finding a location outside of your venue that will provide a background that shows fall in all of its glory.
Have A Jacket or Shawl On Hand
The weather during fall can go from cold to hot and back to freezing in a matter of hours. If you have a shawl or faux-fur cover-up that matches your wedding gown, you can incorporate it into your photos. But, at the very least, have a jacket on hand that you can wear in between shots in the instance of cold weather. You want your poses to look natural, and if you’re shivering and moving around from the less than ideal weather, you could end up with some awkwardly posed photos.
