5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Wedding Rings

Whether your partner just popped the question or you’re recently married – taking care of that sparkler permanently fixed on your left hand will become a regular part of your routine.

Your engagement ring and wedding band are likely two of the most important pieces of jewelry that you own. Not only because of their price, but also their sentimental value. So, it goes without saying you’d want to preserve their quality for as long as possible. This will require quite a bit of regular maintenance, to ensure that your wedding rings stay shiny and more importantly on your finger. We’ve heard too many tales of lost wedding rings to think it doesn’t happen easily. So, we’ve listed five tips below that will help you to take care of your wedding rings starting from the day it’s purchased!

Buy Insurance

When purchasing a ring, adding insurance to that price might not be the first thing on you or your partner’s mind, but it’s one of the most important steps to caring for your ring. Nothing can replace the sentimental value and memories that you’ve attached to your ring, but if it’s lost or damaged you’ll be happy you at least had it insured for its full replacement value. Make sure when purchasing insurance you’ve done your research and choose the policy that provides the most protection for your ring.

Clean Regularly

The easiest way to keep your rings clean is to remove them by gripping the band, avoiding touching the center stone, to prevent any smudges. But, of course, rings are going to accumulate a buildup of oil and dirt after some time and should be cleaned every few weeks. Cleaning your rings yourself isn’t a labor-intensive process, just avoid any harsh chemicals that could damage your ring. Instead, soak it in some warm water for a few minutes with a few drops of dish soap and brush off any excess dirt, which will have your ring looking just as shiny as when you first got engaged!

Diamonds Aren’t Invincible

Diamonds, or any gemstone you’ve chosen for your ring, might be tough and durable, but they aren’t invincible. They are subject to chips and falling out of the prongs that hold them in place just like any other ring you might have. So, for safety purposes remove your ring during any hands-on activities, especially if you’re washing dishes – you don’t want to accidentally lose your ring in the water drain.

Beware of Resizing

Various conditions, from fluctuating weight to changes in temperature, can alter the way your ring fits you. But, don’t be so rash when it comes to getting your ring resized. Once you notice any changes in how your ring fits, wait at least a few months before you choose to resize. If you resize your ring too many times you risk permanent damage resulting in you having to completely remake the entire band and setting of your ring.

Ring Dishes Are Your Friend

The most prominent fear when it comes to your wedding rings is losing or misplacing them. It should be a given that you never remove your ring in public unless you have a chain or pouch you can store it in. But, when you're at home, place a few ring dishes around your house – in the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. That way you have a safe place to store your ring and know exactly where to look for it if you forget to put it back on immediately.
