Heat Proof Bridal Beauty Tips For Your Summer Wedding

Bride or not, you know the struggle of a makeup meltdown (literally) during the summer months.

It’s hard enough to keep your makeup from running on any day, but this is especially true when you’re under the harsh sunlight of summer. The sunny glow of summer sets the perfect backdrop for any wedding but can create a constant need for reapplication and oil blotting. If you’re planning a summer wedding, choosing the right products will help create a look that has staying power AND fits the bridal aesthetic you’re going for! We’ve provided some tips and tricks for how you can keep your makeup intact for your entire wedding day with minimal reapplication!

Make sure your skin is well hydrated

Dehydrated skin will cause your oil glands to be hyperactive and overproduce oil, leading to the dreaded shining face and melted makeup. You want your skin to be hydrated, but moisturizers can give your skin a slight glow and create a slide effect when applying your makeup directly. So what to do?

Keep up a skincare routine leading up to your wedding, so your skin is in optimal condition on your big day. On the day of your wedding, use an oil-free moisturizer and make sure there’s plenty of time for your skin to “drink up” and fully absorb the moisturizer before applying any makeup products to your face. Once your skin is fully dry and ready for makeup, start with an oil-free primer that will set the base for your foundation and keep the shine to a minimum.

Avoid Cream Makeup Products

Put down the creamy blush and eyeshadows, brides! In extreme heat, cream products will streak and bring an oily shine to your skin. Instead, opt for powder blush or eyeshadow that will look fresh and absorb any oil that may surface. If you want greater staying power, you can opt for a cheek stain that you dust a little blush powder over to keep it from streaking. For eyeshadow, make sure to apply two layers for extra assurance.

Setting Powder to the Rescue

If there’s one thing we can stress, it’s using setting powder once your makeup is complete. This will keep all of your makeup in place throughout the day, keeping your foundation and concealer from moving or getting too oily. Following up setting powder with a light setting spray will help keep the rest of your makeup - eyes, cheeks, lips - in place. Pack a setting spray in your emergency kit so you can respray your makeup every few hours to keep it fresh.

Waterproof, Waterproof, Waterproof

Waterproof mascara isn’t the only waterproof product you should be using on your big day. In addition to mascara, make sure that if you decide on wearing eyeliner that it is waterproof or gel, a pencil eyeliner will smudge or run in higher temperatures. For extra protection, apply an eye base (a concealer or primer) that will keep your eyeshadow from fading and provide a brighter pigment upon application.

Go For A Statement Lip

Touching up your lip color is a lot easier than reapplying a smokey eye. Most summer wedding color palettes will call for simpler eye makeup and a statement lip color - we’re talking red, bright pink, or maybe even coral. Always choose a lip stain over a matte lip because not only will they last longer, but they won’t smudge or flake off like some matte lipsticks tend to do after a few hours. If you want more of a glossy finish, there are glossy lip stains out there or you can add a touch of clear lip gloss over your lip stain.

Swap Shiny For Dewy

There’s a fine line between shiny and glowy, you want to make sure you’re the latter on your big day. To achieve a naturally dewy bridal look, apply a matte primer before your foundation. If you’re able to get away with just covering blemishes with concealer instead of using a full coverage foundation, amazing! But, for most of us, we’ll like a little extra coverage, so use a lightweight BB cream or foundation. Skip out on the bronzer, which can be a little too heavy, and opt for a minimal sheen highlighter instead that hits all the high points - cheeks, brow bone, and the tip of your nose. A little extra tip: if you think a highlighter will be too shiny, you can always take a small dab of clear lip gloss and apply it to your cheeks for a subtle shine.
