Money Monday: How to Choose A Wedding Venue For Your Budget

Wedding venues — one of the most important, and big-ticket, items you will purchase for your wedding. On average a wedding venue will cost about $6,000, but that price can fluctuate depending on the location, type of venue, and whether you will be holding your ceremony and reception in one space. There are plenty of venues to choose from within your budget, but it’s important to go into your venue search with an idea of whether you want to be able to choose your vendors or are comfortable with using required vendors. Every venue has a different policy when it comes to vendors, so before you book you want to make sure you know their options before making any commitments. Here are a few of the different kinds of venues and how they may or may not fit into your wedding budget!

Traditional Venue

If you are working with a larger budget and would like to streamline all of your vendors, a traditional venue is typically all-inclusive. Usually, a hotel or event space, this kind of venue does tend to cost more because it offers catering, alcohol, rentals, etc. Just keep in mind that with a traditional venue you will likely have to use their required vendors which may cost more per service than what you originally allotted for in your budget.

Unique Venue

More unique venues, like a museum or brewery, aren’t typically marketed as wedding venue spaces. Due to this, you may experience steeper fees when trying to book them for your ceremony or reception. You would likely need to rent the entire space for an extended period, which would take away from that venue’s usual source of income, causing you to pay more to rent the space for the day.

Modern Venue

A modern venue can be a typical wedding space, like an estate or rooftop space, but has more flexibility when it comes to vendors than traditional venues. This gives you the option to search for more affordable vendors. So, if you are set on a specific vendor or are working with a tighter budget, this may be a good option for you to have a classic venue that will still work for you and your budget.

Shell Venue

Shell venues, like a warehouse or backyard, are budget-friendly as they tend to be the cheapest option for overall venue cost. However, be aware of how much you will need to decorate the space. Rentals and decor can add up when you are building a ceremony and reception space from scratch, so just make sure to consider that when deciding on a potential venue.
