Money Monday: How to Manage Your Wedding Budget Spreadsheet

Setting your wedding budget is so much more than deciding on a dollar amount. When planning a wedding you have to keep track of so many moving parts it can start to get overwhelming, especially when dealing with your budget. After you’ve decided on a maximum budget with your partner, it’s always a good idea to start a spreadsheet listing all of your expenses. Whether you’re trying to stay on a strict budget or simply don’t want to accidentally miss a vendor payment, spreadsheets will help you stay organized throughout the planning process. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while you’re putting together your budget spreadsheet!

Create Separate Tabs

It’s tempting to just throw all of your vendors into one tab on your spreadsheet, but taking those few extra minutes to organize them by category will be helpful as you move further into planning. Create a separate tab for each of your wedding categories like venue, florals, photography, catering, etc. For each tab list out all of the individual expenses that fall under that category, whether that’s by vendor or topic like bridesmaid bouquets and centerpieces. This way you can easily access all payment info in just a few clicks!

Monthly Evaluation

Creating a spreadsheet is just the start! In order to stay on top of your budget and vendor payments, you want to set a monthly reminder to have a sit down with your partner and any other contributors. This will allow you to see where your budget stands and whether any adjustments need to be made to stay within your desired range. This could be as quick as a 5-10 minute chat, but it’s good to have them regularly so you don’t get off track with your budget.

Track Spending

Once you have your spreadsheet set up by category, start listing the estimated cost for each item in all of your tabs. You also want to create columns for the final cost and whether you are paying in full or in payments. This will help you track any potential payments, determine if you are staying on budget, and whether or not you will have any extra funds to put towards any extra items. Just make sure to keep this up to date, so you don’t mix up how much money is remaining in your budget.
