Tips for How to Get the Best Engagement Photos

You’ve had your epic proposal, now, what’s next?

Well, if you didn’t have a professional photographer on hand when your partner popped the question (and even if you did), you’ll be considering an engagement photo session. Engagement photos aren’t a necessary part of your wedding journey, but they are a great way to have a trial run with your intended wedding photographer. Plus, you can use the photos for an engagement announcement, invitations, your wedding website, or simply to have for yourself. For someone who’s not used to being in front of the camera, the process of taking engagement and wedding photos can seem daunting. So as we’re nearing the end of engagement season, we’ve listed five simple tips below that will help you get the best engagement photos possible!

Make It Personal

Plan your shoot around who you and your partner are as a couple to make it more personal. Try to think of two or three things you like to do together, whether that’s going for walks at sunset or dressing up for weekly date nights. Choosing familiar scenarios for your engagement shoot will help make you feel more comfortable and give a little insight into what you’re like as a couple. You can even bring personal items into a shoot, like a pet or old love letters, for meaningful detail shots.

Location Is Everything

You can have your engagement photoshoot just about anywhere - a beach, your home, a photo studio, etc. But, it’s always a good idea to pick a location that is meaningful to your relationship. You can return to the place where you first met, where you had your first date, or maybe where you got engaged. Picking a location that means more to you than just a place that looks good in photos will give a meaningful backstory to your photos and allow your photographer to get a better idea of your story and how they should go about shooting it.

Get to Know Your Photographer

Before your shoot, make an effort to meet in person with your photographer, or at least schedule a phone or Skype call. This allows you to get to know them better, so when the day of the shoot arrives, you won’t feel like you’re posing for a stranger. It’s also a great opportunity for you and your partner to share your story with your photographer and convey some of the specific photos you would like from the shoot. This way, you can trust your photographer to carry out your vision on the day of the shoot and relish in the experience.

Focus On Your Partner

The most important thing to remember during your shoot is to be present and focus on your partner. If you’re stressing about how the photos are coming out or trying to craft the perfect poses, you’re going to end up with shots you don’t love. Instead, try to have fun and act how you normally would if it was just the two of you, giving your photographer a chance to capture sweet, candid moments.
