Money Monday: 3 Wedding Budget Tips to Keep in Mind

Creating your wedding budget is the first step to planning a wedding that will include all of your dream elements, but won’t set you back in debt a few thousand dollars. Having solid numbers to work with will help you plan your wedding in a way that works for you and your budget. This gives you the ability to research the wedding professionals that fall within your budget and have the items or the wedding style you want. If you don’t have your entire budget ready to be spent, that’s okay. As long as you have a plan and an overall budget that you want to stick to, you can start ticking off some of the bigger ticket items on your to-do list like your venue and photographer. If you’re working with a tight budget, here are a few tips to keep in mind as you start planning!

Down Payments

You decided on a wedding budget, high five! But, for some that may just be a ballpark figure that they don’t necessarily have in its entirety, ready to be spent. So, before you start booking your vendors and finding a venue, you want to make sure you have money set aside for your down payments. Typically you want to have at least 20-30% of your overall budget ready to use to pay vendors. This way you don’t have to stress about getting money together last minute to pay vendors or losing vendors due to lack of funds.

Cut Traditions

As a modern bride, you always have the option to cut traditions that don’t serve you or your budget. Consider your priorities, deciding what traditions you want to include in your big day and which you can do without. If you don’t want to give out wedding favors or have a cocktail hour, then save some money by cutting it from your wedding agenda. Your wedding is your day and you can make room in your budget for the items you find important by cutting those you don’t.

Monthly Contributions

Whether you have your entire budget ready to go in a savings account or are still working on saving money for your wedding, consider making monthly contributions to your wedding fund. This can either help you reach your budget, or give you a cushion to help pay for any upgrades or unexpected costs. Shaving off money from your regular or everyday purchases and putting it in your wedding fund can cause your balance to quickly add up over time.
